World Meeting of Families 2018 – Derry Diocesan Preparatory Meeting

This is the annual Catholic Schools Week (28 January – 4 February).

This event presents a special opportunity for our school families and ourselves, as a parish, to not only celebrate the fact that parents are the primary educators of their children, but also the vital role that our Catholic schools play in assisting parents in their duty to raise their children, especially in the ways of faith.

In partnership with World Meeting of Families 2018, the Catholic Schools’ Week Steering Committee has developed a theme for this year in our Catholic Schools; the theme is: Called to be a Family of Families. A programme for this year invites Catholic schools to reflect on and to celebrate the relationship that exists between home, school and parish through participation in four catechetical moments in the build-up to the World Meeting of Families in August.

Catholic Schools Week 2018 runs in the same format as previous years but there is one important distinction. In 2018, Catholic Schools Week is to be the high point of the primary and post-primary school catechetical programme. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2018 is Catholic Schools: Families of Faith.

We thank our parents, school staff and Boards of Management for their commitment to Catholic education. And we always remember the great sacrifices made by the generations before us to secure the beautiful legacy of the Catholic schools we enjoy here today.

Readings for 4th Sunday in ordinary time

Deut 18:15-20. Chapter 18 is very interesting. It gives the reasons the Lord assisted the Hebrews in driving gout the original inhabitants of the Promised Land. Moses promises that God will raise up prophets from among themselves to guide them. Jesus, who would speak with unassailable authority, will fulfil God’s promise par excellence.

Ps 94. O that today you would listen to his voice!

1 Cor 7:32-35. St Paul at this time considered that Jesus’ return was imminent. Therefore his overriding concern was that his Christian converts should cultivate an undivided heart in seeking to please God. The theme is a continuation of last Sunday’s.

Mk 1:21-28. ‘The time of the new Moses has come, but here, beyond all expectations, we have in Jesus the very Word of God, God’s full revelation of himself. This explains the surprising authority and power of Jesus. It will be fully revealed on the cross.’

Mass for the Sick will take place in the Carmelite Retreat centre Termonbacca on Tuesday 30th January at 7.30pm

God bids us welcome to his house

God bids us welcome to his house

and he invites us to his feast.

Day of great joy and happiness Alleluia.

Let us approach unto the feast to which the Lord invites us all and eat the bread which gives us life.

To do your will is my desire

To do your will is my desire

To live in you Lord is my life.

To spread your love through all the earth

to find in you the joy of life.

All of my days I sing your praise.

Through all my nights you are my light

You will shine forth through all my years

and joyously will bring me home.

Let there be peace shared among us

Let there be peace in our hearts.

May now your peace sweep this nation cause us O Lord to arise; give us a fresh understanding of all the peace that is real.

Let there be peace shared among us let there be peace.

Let there be love etc. Let there be joy etc.

Make me a channel of your peace

Where there is hatred let me bring your love. Where there is injury your pardon Lord, And where there's doubt true faith in you.

Oh Master grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Parish Meeting for Couples

Getting Married in 2018?

I am inviting all couples from this parish or getting married in this parish during 2018 to a special meeting which will take place in The Sliabh Sneacht Centre, Drumfries on Sunday 18 February at 3pm.

This meeting is for the couples themselves and for their parents. While all couples from this parish, or getting married in this parish, are to undertake an Accord Marriage Preparation Course, it is intended that this additional meeting will further help them and their families prepare for the celebration of this Sacrament. (Where a couple are living overseas, it will be sufficient for their parents to attend.)

Father Bradley
