Readings for 5th Sunday in Ordinary time
Job 7:1-4, 6-7. “Swifter than a weaver’s shuttle my days have passed, and vanished,
leaving no hope behind.” The God-fearing Job of the Old Testament speaks for all
who patiently endure suffering. In today’s Gospel reading we will see Jesus beginning
to reveal God close-up. His plan all along for human beings is going to be revealed
as having been one of infinite tenderness and compassion.
Ps 146
1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23. St Paul is addressing Christian converts, mostly poor people, in the
notoriously immoral port city of Corinth. Although he would be quite entitled to
claim his pay as an apostle, he had supported himself always by his trade as a tent-maker.
He would rather die than present any obstacle to the Good News. All he wants for
himself a share in Christ’s promises.
Mk 1:29-39.
Parish Meeting for Couples Getting Married in
2018
I am inviting all couples from this parish
or getting married in this parish during 2018 to a special meeting which
will take place in The Sliabh Sneacht Centre, Drumfries on Sunday 18 February at
3pm. This meeting is for the couples themselves and
for their parents. While all couples from this parish, or getting married in this
parish, are to undertake an Accord Marriage Preparation Course, it is intended that
this additional meeting will further help them and their families prepare for the
celebration of this Sacrament. (Where a couple are living overseas, it will be sufficient
for their parents to attend.) Father Bradley
