THE HEALING MINISTRY OF JESUS GOSPEL – ST MARK 1:29-39

In ‘Ordinary Time’ of the liturgical year, the Sunday Gospels focus our attention on the public ministry of Jesus. Two of the focal points of Jesus’ ministry were healing the sick and driving out evil spirits, both of which we hear in today’s Gospel passage. Prayer was of course central to His ministry and we are told today that 'He (then) went off to a lonely place and prayed there' (Vs 35). Next Sunday, 11th February, is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. In the Church it is World Day of Prayer for the Sick. The theme chosen by Pope Francis this year is provided by the words that Jesus spoke from the Cross to Mary, His Mother, “Woman, behold your son...Behold your mother” (Jn 19:26-27). In his Message for World Day of the Sick, the Holy Father says of the theme “The Lord’s words brilliantly illuminate the mystery of the Cross, which does not represent a hopeless tragedy, but rather the place where Jesus manifests His glory and shows His love to the end.” Our Blessed Mother, the One chosen to bear the Son of God, witnessed at the foot of the Cross, with faith and trust in God’s will, the suffering of her Son, Jesus. This week, as we pray the Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes for the sick, we pray that we too will have the courage and strength to imitate that level of faith and trust in God’s will for us in the crosses that we bear. We pray, through the intercession of our Holy Mother, that the healing hand of Jesus will bring inner peace to all who suffer from any form of sickness.

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. St Bernadette, pray for us.
