Readings for 4th Sunday of Easter - Good shepherd Sunday (a day of prayer for vocations)

Acts 4:8-12. ‘By the name of Jesus, ‘God saves’, Peter had just healed a cripple at the gate of the temple. He and John are arrested by the Jewish authorities and brought before the Sanhedrin. Peter preaches how God has turned everything upside-down; Jesus, rejected by the religious authorities, has become the keystone’. The keystone of an arch (top centre) completes and stabilizes it. Outside of Jesus no one can be saved.

Ps 117. ‘It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.’

1 Jn 3:1-2. You could spend a lifetime pondering this statement from St John “the disciple that Jesus loved”: “….. we shall be like him (God) because we shall see him as he really is.” To properly know a person requires an affinity or likeness to the one known.

Jn 10:11-18. This heartfelt speech is placed after Jesus’ run-in with the “blind” Pharisees over his cure of the man blind from birth. It plumbs the depth of commitment of the Good Shepherd to the welfare of his sheep. Also his mysterious acceptance by some and rejection by others: “I know my own and my own know me….” Our priests dispense the sacraments ‘in persona Christi’.

Singleness – A Poem by Father Pádraig Daly OSA written for Matthew Hemson on his Ordination

There will be joy too in your singleness

as when gloom lifts while you listen

from some heart fastened to sorrow;

as when children in schoolyards ambush you

and drag you off in riotous play;

as when affection swamps you in a festive congregation;

as when ailing women you visit in shabby flats

fall silent before the mystery of broken bread;

as when the dying bless you

with their last most precious smiles;

as when, sitting in the silence of automatic prayer

you know suddenly you are being visited by God.

The old will shelter in your untidy heart;

the young will know in you

the laughter of Yahweh; and the wretched see

you have no spouse but them.

Adoration Chapel

The Adoration Committee are inviting parishioners to spend some time each week in the Adoration Chapel to pray for the keeping of the 8th Amendment on May 28th.

Mass for the Sick will take place in the Carmelite retreat Centre Termonbacca on Tuesday 24th April, beginning at 7.30pm

Seek Ye First

Seek ye first the kingdom of God

And his righteousness And all these things will be added unto you, Alleluia.

Christ be our Light

Longing for light we wait in darkness

longing for truth we turn to you

Make us your own your holy people

light for the world to see.

Chorus: Christ be our light shine in our hearts

Shine through the darkness, Christ be our light shine in your church gathered today.

Longing for peace our world is troubled

Longing for hope many despair, Your word alone has power to save us,

Make us your living voice. Chorus:

Longing for food many are hungry

Longing for water many still thirst

Make us your bread broken for others shared until all are fed. Chorus:

Many the gifts many the people

many the hearts that yearn to belong

Let us be servants to one another

making your kingdom come.

Lay your hands:

Lay your hands gently upon us, Let their touch render your peace, Let them bring your forgiveness and healing

Lay your hands gently lay your hands.

You were sent to free the broken hearted

You were sent to give sight to the blind

You desire to heal all our illness

Lay your hands gently lay your hands.

Lord we come to you through one another

Lord we come to you in all our need

Lord we come to you seeking wholeness

Lay your hands gently lay your hands.

How great thou art

O lord my God when I in awesome wonder,

Consider all the works thy hand has made.

I see the stars I hear the rolling thunder thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul my Saviour God to thee, How great thou art, how great thou art (2)
