Dear Parishioner and Gentle Reader,

It’s that time of year when every week brings a noticeable change in the world of nature around us. Branches that were barren up until recently are now bedecked with buds bursting outwards with new leaves, new life, and the promise of new flower and fruit. The varied shades of green adds to the luxurious growth that enriches the whole countryside. Almost every branch has a different hue. And of course, there are some branches that haven’t come to life at all. These are the ones that were damaged or broken during the winter storms and consequently have been cut off from their sap, the source of life.

It is this powerful image of the vine and its branches that Jesus uses in today’s gospel to teach that it is only when we are linked into him that we can achieve anything of lasting value. It is only when his life permeates our hearts that we can reach our true potential as members of the one caring family. Without his sustenance and life, we cannot bear fruit by ourselves.

We know from experience that we can cut ourselves off from him through sin, selfishness or just plain carelessness. A neglected friendship falters quickly. However, for us there is always hope. Unlike the vine branches, our rift from him can always be healed and restored. He is always ready and willing to link with us again through prayer and reconciliation. He is the vine, but he is much more – he is also our Saviour.

“Be kind and merciful and let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting. In the slums we are the light of God’s kindness to the poor. To children, to the poor, to all who suffer and are lonely, give them always a happy smile. Give them not only your care, but also your heart. And that will make all the difference”. St Teresa of Calcutta

With every blessing, Fr Colum
