Dear Parishioner and Gentle Reader,

Today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, a feast that doesn’t get as much attention as Christmas, Easter or even Pentecost. The story of the Ascension could make us feel uncomfortable for it has shades of farewell and leave taking. It may well evoke memories of waiting in the departure lounge for the boarding call to whisk family members away to a distant new life; standing at the school gates watching the offspring take reluctant steps in to the strange world of education; with heaving hearts depositing ageing and infirm parents to the care of a nursing home. Like the disciples on the outskirts of Jerusalem, we sometimes find ourselves in strange and frightening places where we are lonely and feel ill-equipped to carry on. Away back in the fifth century this is what St Augustine wrote about the Ascension: “You ascended from before our eyes. We turned back grieving, only to find you in our hearts”. And therein lies the meaning of what we celebrate today. The Ascension reminds us that if we are looking for the Lord, we need a new way of seeing, a new way of following, which we have come to call faith. In other words, if we’re looking for Jesus, our Risen Saviour, faith tells us that his presence will be discovered in the community that follows him, especially when we gather to celebrate the Eucharist.

As we listen to the impatient words of the first reading: “Why are you standing here, looking into the sky?”, we realise that we must not wait around either in loneliness or puzzlement but rather get up and get on with the task. The parting words of Jesus call us to witness. We are to live in such a way that others will become aware of God’s presence in the world around us.

We recall the words of St Teresa of Avila:

“Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours; yours are the eyes through which Christ’s compassion looks out on the world, yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good and yours are the hands with which he is to bless us now.”

With every blessing, Fr Colum
