World Meeting of Families/21st
August 2018: The world meeting of Families begin its meetings on Tuesday 21st August. All
families in each Parish in Ireland are asked to come together in the Parish Church
or Churches to pray on that evening for the success of these meetings. It is important
to note that the numbers already booked for these meetings far surpasses the numbers
present at other meetings on the family in other countries. We are encouraged to
make this evening an evening of Prayer in a lead up to the Mass to be celebrated
on the Sunday by Pope Francis. We are advised by the national organising committee
to have the Evening Prayer of the Church on that evening with some extra prayers
for the occasion. The Praying of the Psalms is the official prayer of God’s Family
in the World. This prayer consists of a hymn, some readings and prayers of the Faithful
and the psalms of that particular day. As you know the 150 Psalms in the Bible are
a precious legacy we Catholics have inherited from our spiritual ancestors. For
three thousand years believers throughout the world have prayed these songs of praise
to express to God what was in their hearts, hoping to discover in these prayers
their mysterious and longed-- for God. These
Psalms were the Daily Prayers of Jesus himself, so praying them is praying the very
same words the Son of God used to commune with his Father. Countless Christians
have made the psalms a part of their lives. Saints and Martyrs have died with
psalms on their lips Basil the great, Cyril of Alexandria, Francis de Sales, Francis
Xavier, Teresa of Avila, Thomas a Beckett, and Thomas Moore to name but a few. Charlemagne
loved the Psalms, and made sure they were taught in schools, and prided himself
on his nickname David who was noted as king to write, and promote the Psalms.
Some who attended school here in the parish out in the Glen School studied the psalms
and until recently used them in prayer until their death. “The Lord is my Shepherd
was a popular one”. We have become familiar with them ourselves since the renewal
of the liturgy. The psalms predate the Our Father and were a response to our request—“Teach
us to pray”. As we pray the psalms we accomplish the purpose for which we were created--
to praise and to love God our creator. The psalms are prayed by lay people, because
they are the prayer of the church. They are also prayed by priests and by people
who live in monasteries. When we pray them they will be led by lay people. 1: The
choir will lead the singing. 2: Two people will lead the praying of the psalms and
all the people will join with them. 3: Someone else will read the Word of God. 4:
Then someone else again will pray the prayers of the faithful, and 5: another prayer
at the end.
