14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

What sort of a community were the people of Nazareth to have turned their back on Jesus. We fail to see that every day we can be guilty of their type of behaviour. We imitate the people of Nazareth when we turn our backs on God. The problem about God and Nazareth was that God came to Nazareth as one of the villagers, and they could not come to terms with the situation. They did not recognise that God is present among people the truth was staring them in the face, but they didn’t recognise it. Christ’s family circumstances were too well known among the villagers and because he was one of them he had nothing to offer.

Life in many ways, is about searching for God but many of us go looking for him in the far-off hills and in obscure places. We forget that God moves in mysterious ways, and is present in the ordinary bits and pieces of life showing up more often than we think. The trouble with us is that, because we are so close to one another, we only see the faults and sadly become a community of knockers and be grudgers allowing ourselves to be blinded by jealously and prejudice. If we can but a bad interpretation on a neighbour’s act of kindness we won’t miss the opportunity to do so.

The gospel is asking us to say thanks and to give recognition to God’s goodness, so give thanks for the person you married, a word of praise for the lady who cooks the dinner, for the wage earner, for the neighbour who chats to you in the supermarket and for the neighbours who gave you time, support and attention during a recent death. Please do not take for granted the presence of God among us.
