Dear Parishioner and Gentle Reader,

“So little time and so much to do” seems to be the spirit of the age. Leisure time appears to have vanished, as people attempt to balance work, family, doing shopping, driving children here and there, caring for elderly parents and juggling a host of other responsibilities. In the end, feeling like they’re sandwiched in the middle, trying to accommodate everyone. Being all things to all people, and precious little to themselves.

A sandwich is an apt symbol - something that speaks of hurry, rush, filling a gap. It’s usually swallowed, not savoured. These times seem to swallow people up, and that’s not good. While appliances may be designed more for replacement than repair, the human body is not.

In today’s Readings, we have the shepherds and meadows described in Jeremiah, the peace and unity referred to in the Second Reading and the green valleys with still waters of the Psalm beckoning us back from life’s hubbub. In the Gospel we see Jesus advising his apostles to come apart to a lonely place where they can pause and reflect in order to realign their priorities and open their hearts to God.

Maybe we can do little about the things we have to do or to cope with all that life throws at us, but maybe we could slow down and be less hurried. Maybe as an antidote we could give more attention to whatever we do and be more present to whoever we are with. That would seem to be the way of Jesus. It’s also the difference between living and existing.

With every blessing, Fr Colum

Words of Wisdom

Only in calm waters can you see your reflection, not in running waters. Only in tranquility can you find that resting place which stillness seeks.
