The Diocesan Plan sets out the path we hope to take
in every parish throughout the diocese over the course of the next three years,
focusing on three pastoral themes:
1.Building Welcoming and Inclusive Communities.
2.Be Disciples of Jesus Christ, Growing in Faith Together.
3.Work to make Jesus Known and Loved
World Mission Sunday is the one day in the year when
every parish joins together in prayer and generosity to help support struggling
mission dioceses around the world.
On this day, Pope Francis asks us to pray a little stronger
and dig a little deeper so that faith, hope and love can flourish. Mission Sunday
is therefore an appropriate day to remind ourselves that, because of our baptism,
all of us are called to be missionaries every day. It is a call to bring the message
of Christ to life in our workplaces and in our Churches, at our meetings and around
our kitchen tables. Doesn’t our world need to hear of hope and love and justice?
We may think that we are too weak or not “holy” enough
for this mission; but we, like the apostles in today’s Gospel, are not saints, but
ordinary people. It was with these ordinary people that Jesus set out to, and succeeded
in, changing the world. Jesus considered his apostles worthy of Christian mission
and he considers us worthy too.
The 3-year Diocesan Pastoral Plan, which we have reflected
upon for the last 3 weeks, is devised to equip and enable us in our parish to embrace
and serve the mission of the Church in these changing times for the Church and for
parishes. While parish life has to change to engage with changing circumstances,
the mission of the Church does not change. The ‘constant’ for all of us in our fast-changing
world is God’s Word in the
Gospels, which, 2000 years on, remains unwavering, unchanging.
That is our starting point for implementing the Pastoral Plan in our parishes, and
the only place from which to start.
The third theme of our Pastoral Plan is: Work to
make Jesus Known and Loved. This is our mission. This theme is, in effect,
the summit of the faith-journey which the
Pastoral Plan invites us to take in our parish. The plan
asks us to be a welcoming and inclusive parish community, growing together in faith
and discipleship, with a ‘mission’ to Make Jesus Known and Loved.
In today’s Gospel, we are told, “The Son of Man himself
did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many”.
Jesus’ teachings were always more than words – He taught by His own actions and
example; He taught by His life of service. A life of service – seeking to serve
rather than to be served – is central to our living out the mission of the Church.
It is at the core of what it means to Make Jesus Known and Loved. We
don’t need to travel to foreign lands to do this. We can do it right here in our
own parish. This is our mission. This is the mission of our Church. This is our
mission as parishioners of Cappagh Parish. Will you rise to the challenge?
