The Irish Catholic

There is a real need for us as Catholics to feed our faith on a daily basis. This is why this parish is partnering with The Irish Catholic newspaper to launch a special initiative for 10 weeks from November 29th 2018. Extra copies of the paper will be available for just €1 per edition for this time, and I encourage as many people as possible to pick it up. From hearing uplifting positive news from parishes around the country, to getting the Catholic perspective on the latest news, there is something for everyone in the paper. For just €10 therefore, you could have a mini-retreat with The Irish Catholic over Advent and Christmas, and start the New Year with purpose. So please, do pick up a copy, take time to read it throughout the week, and invest in your faith this winter. There are a number of papers available each week – Take them, read them and be informed.

Last week’s collection was €4,782 | Sincere thanks

Readings first Sunday of Advent

Jer 33:14-16. In the lead-up to the destruction of Jerusalem and the subsequent Babylonian exile, integrity and hope seemed to have vanished from the land. The prophet here reassures his people that God’s covenant with David will even yet be fulfilled. God ‘will make a virtuous Branch grow for David.’

Ps 24. Such is the day-to-day nurturing by the Lord of the promised virtuous branch of David.

Thess 3:12-4:2. We are now in New Testament times and the virtuous branch that is growing in Thessalonica (top of Greece) is there for all to see. “We remember before our God and Father how active is the faith, how unsparing the love, how persevering the hope which you have from our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thess:2).

Lk 21:25-28, 34-36. The day of Jesus’ 2nd Coming “will be spring on you suddenly, like a trap.” But those who have lived in watchfulness and prayer have nothing to fear: they can stand erect before their judge and their saviour.
