May Altars

Many of us Catholics create May Altars in our homes. We will decorate a corner or table in our home with religious symbols. These altars become centres of prayer and reminders to the members of our households and visitors that God is in our midst and should be at the focus of our lives.

In a tradition probably coming from the countries of southern Europe in the mid-1800's, households to create May Altars. A May Altar could hold a statue of Mary, a Rosary, books about Mary, flowers, and anything else that helps family members reflect on Mary's life and example of humble devotion to Jesus and following God's will.

Readings for the Second Sunday of Easter

Today's readings are all three about real Mccoy faith.

Acts 5: 12-16. The first months of the infant Church were intense, dangerous and eventful. Miracles were not unusual and the felt support of the Spirit had not been confined to Pentecost. "The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, as everything they owned was held in common." (Acts 4:32)

Apoc 1: 9-13, 17-19. The John of today's gospel also wrote Apocalypse (or Revelation). The 2nd reading will be from Apocalypse until Pentecost. 'The apostle tells us what he saw, that we also believe'. The 'seven lamp standards' represent 7 local churches but reprint everyone in the Church.

Jn 20: 19-31. This is the reading chosen for this Sunday in all three cycles. The special appearance to St Thomas occurred on the Sunday after Easter Sunday, I.e. today. Thomas's response to Jesus' invitation: "My Lord and my God!" Is 'the crown of the Johannine gospel. The original gospel ended here.
