Readings for 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Wis 18:6-9.Written about 50 BC to support the faith of Jews in Alexandria the author of Wisdom opposes contemporary Greek influences. He sees God’s hand in history, especially in the Passover triumph of the Israelites’ escape from Egypt. That night, the Hebrews had ‘joyfully taken courage’ and trusted as a people in the Lord.

Ps 32:1, 12, 18-20, 22.R/ v.12. ‘Happy the people the Lord has chosen as his own.’

Heb 11:1-2, 8-19.This letter was written for Jewish converts. It is a hymn to the faith of Paul’s Hebrew ancestors, often uprooted but confident pilgrims. Even facing the death of his only son, Abraham for example, believed that he would be returned to him from the dead. .

Lk 12:32-48.Since the kingdom of God has been bestowed upon us there is no reason for fear. But neither is there a room for complacency. ‘We know not the day nor the hour,’ as Fr Joe Carolan used to intone. What is expected from each of us will be in proportion to the gifts and trust that have been given us.

A Thought........ How is it that one hundred years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had a car; today, everyone has a car and only the rich own a horse?
