Children’s Newsletters

From this weekend on there is a children’s newsletter available in the porch. It reflects the theme of the Sunday Gospel and contains a variety of activities, drawings and colouring work which all can help enhance the children’s understanding of the Liturgy of the day. They also provide an opportunity for parents and family to talk about and explore the Sunday liturgy through the week ahead, which you are encouraged to do with your children

A Thought... A different version of you exists in the mind of each person who knows you.

Welcoming Father Neil McGoldrick

Father Neil McGoldrick, until now Parish Priest of Burt, Inch & Fahan, has arrived with us to live in retirement in Desertegney. He is no stranger to this, his native parish. We are glad that the renovations to the Parochial House at Castleross are complete and we want to thank T & D Doherty (Shivey) Contractors and Liam Baldrick Architect for all their work. While, in time and after a good rest, Father McGoldrick will help out with Masses throughout the parish, he is not a curate here (as Father Doherty and Father McGlinchey were previously). He will not be available for Weddings or Funerals and we will all do our best to respect his need for privacy. His will be a delightful presence amongst us. It will be wonderful too to have the light on again in the Parochial House.

The New School Year

As the new school year begins, many families will take pictures of their children in their uniform at the front door on their first day back to (or of) school. We invite you to use this tradition as an opportunity to pray together for your child or children by saying the blessing below as they leave. At these milestone times, parents and children alike can experience a variety of emotions but inviting God into such moments can make them seem more exciting and joyful and less fearful and anxious. May God bless all the pupils and staff of our Parish Family as they begin this new year.

Blessing at the Front Door for the First Day of School

Heavenly Father, as we close the door to our home to begin our journey, we ask you to bless (children’s name/s) on their first day back to / of school. We ask you to open the doors of new hope, new possibilities, new friendships and new learning for them. Bless their teachers, their friends and all the staff of the school. Be with them in all they will do this year. Protect them and keep them safe until they return through this door to the home where they are cherished and loved.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen

Garden Fête - Thank You

The Buncrana Garden Fête 2019 has been an immense success due to the help and support of a tremendous number of people, some of whom are mentioned herewith and many of whom are anonymous. Those who baked and bought tickets, those who sold raffle lines and secured sponsorship, those who helped in so many ways on the day itself – to say nothing of those who turned out in overwhelming numbers to give their support on the day. A great “thank you” to all concerned and to those in the Parish Office and those who attended the meetings and who were in the eye of the storm. Hopefully, such a lovely experience and expression of who we are as a Parish can be repeated next year. Father Bradley

Readings for this Sunday

Eccles (Sir) 3:17-20, 28-29. The writer Ben Sirach is an outstanding example of those hasidim (the ‘devout’) of Judaism. It chimes perfectly with today’s gospel reading. With his help little islands of faith would survive persecutions, and in them the teaching of Jesus 200 years later would take root. “An attentive ear is the sage’s dream.”

Ps 67:4-7, 10-11, R/ v11.

Heb 12:18-19, 22-24. In contrast to the great and sometimes terrifying signs of God’s presence in the Old Testament, in the New Testament Paul writes: “what you have come to is nothing known to the senses…” By faith we live now in “the city of the living God” in the company of the millions of saints and angels.

Lk 14:1, 7-14. This reading harks back to the Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are the poor…… We who are comfortable must care for the poor among as our brothers and sisters
