Celebrating the 100th Birthday of Maureen farren
As a
parish, we congratulate Mrs Maureen Farren, Grianan Park, as she celebrates her
100th Birthday today, 8 September. Her birthday also coincides with the celebration
of Our Lady’s Birthday, an appropriate coincidence for someone so faithful as Maureen.
In recognition of her tremendous contribution to the life of this parish and further
afield through her continued commitment to young people and adults with special
needs in SpREd and through her commitment to St Joseph’s Young Priests’ Society,
Pope Francis has awarded Maureen the Benemerenti Medal. The Benemerenti Medal (meaning
“well earned”) is awarded by the Pope for dedicated service to the Catholic Church.
In Maureen’s case, it certainly has been “well earned”. This is a great blessing
for her and for the parish which benefits also from her daily Holy Hour in the Adoration
chapel each morning, and attendance at Mass here each day. Maureen will be invested
with the insignia at 9.00am Mass in St Mary’s Oratory. We warmly congratulate Maureen
and wish her many more years of health and contentment.

24 September – 3 December. The evenings will start with tea/coffee and dessert at
7.30pm. The course will then start at 8pm and will run until 9pm. The course is

Readings for 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wis 9:13-18. This reading is directly opposed to the culture/philosophy of Postmodernism,
everywhere in vogue today, Out Creator is the foundation of all being and as such
His intentions would be utterly unknowable to Man, flawed as he is, had he not revealed
them and left us the Holy Spirit to guide us. “Thus have the paths of those on earth
been straightened and men been taught what pleases you, and saved, by Wisdom.”
Ps 89:3-6, 12-14, 17 r/ v 1. “I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything
I have learnt from my Father….” (Jn 15.15 and today’s gospel acclamation)
Phm 9-10. This short letter to the owner of the converted slave Onesimus, who had robbed
him and fled, reveals the warm heart of St Paul, former implacable enemy of Christians.
‘The leaven of gospel love is hidden away in the dough of a pagan society.’
Lk 14:25-33. It is common sense to estimate requirements for any proposed enterprise. Becoming
a Christian is no different. It means being prepared to put God before everything.
And ‘everything’ here means ‘everything’. It includes not just possessions but even
family ties. Anything else leads to failure and could make us look foolish.
