Ingratitude is the most common
of all human failings.
Nothing is so hurtful as to be taken for granted without a word of thanks or praise.
What causes most pain is the neglect and coldness of those for whom we have done
our best. One of the most satisfying experiences in life is to receive a word of
praise as a mark of appreciation. While we are ready to deplore the ingratitude
of others, we are often unaware of our own ungratefulness.
As Christ headed towards Jerusalem
and the cross,
he met deep and amazing ingratitude along the border between Samaria and Galilee.
Ten lepers huddled in their misery, cried out to him for help, ‘Jesus, master,
have pity on us.’ Leprosy then was akin to aids today. The victims were treated
as outcasts and isolated from the community. Their prayer was answered and they
went off rejoicing because they were cleansed. When only one leper thought it worthwhile
to return and say thanks, Jesus expressed disappointment at the attitude of the
nine who stayed away and failed to thank God. He made the very human and moving
comment, ‘Were not ten made clean? Where are the other nine?’
The leper with the grateful
heart
is an example to us all, because he got benefit from his encounter with Jesus. By
acknowledging the source of his new-found health, his spirit as well as his body
was healed. The other nine lacked something in failing to show any appreciation
to Jesus by keeping everything for themselves and giving nothing back. They missed
the joy that comes from giving thanks. The story reminds us of how often we fail
to express thanks to God for favours granted.
The real worth of our love
for God
flows from our ability to recognise the blessings, great and small, which come our
way daily. Coming together for the Mass makes it clear that giving thanks to God
is part of our worship and prayer life. The more we thank God for his generosity,
the more we will be open to receive his blessings. Let’s not let a day pass without
thanking God for the good things of life and the crosses and trials that put us
to the test.
