Readings for 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Eccles (Sir) 35:12-14, 16-19. The oppressed, the orphan, the widow: are three symbols of the ‘poor in spirit’. Compare Jesus’ Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount. Their attitude of persistence and unflagging trust pleases God and reaches to His heart. Ecclesiasticus helped to preserve ‘little islands of faith in Israel, in which the teaching of Christ could later take root.’

2 Tim 4:6-8, 16-18. Faithful to the end, Paul concluded this letter shortly before his martyrdom in 67. ‘Like a good athlete Paul had pushed himself, faithful to the end.’ With the Lord’s help he had never weakened in his mission to the Pagans.

Lk 19: 9-14. Jesus continues to teach us how to pray. We are cautioned to be humble in our prayer. Humility is sometimes defined simply as truth or reality. The truth is that even though we know we are sinners we bask in the sunshine of God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness, never in our own righteousness.

Last week’s Mission Sunday collection was €5,340 - Sincere thanks
