November is a Special Month for Our Deceased:
November
is a family month and so we think of our deceased relatives and friends. Naturally
we want them to be happy. We want them to be with God for with God they will find
joy, happiness, and bliss. Because the souls of our departed are family, relatives,
and friends we will find it easy to pray for them. After all they are our own, and
we know that they will pray for us when they come into the presence of God. We will
visit their graves in the cemetery and pray for them. We will visit the Church in
which they worshiped God and pray for them, and above all we will go to Mass and
pray for them. In these ways we will ask God—the God of compassion and love—to bring
them into his presence to enjoy the banquet he has prepared for them. We will put
their names on the dead list which will help us remember them by name. We will have
Masses celebrated for them in church each week during November, and we will join
in those Masses because we are sincere and are people of integrity. There is little
point in writing down names on a sheet of paper if we don’t come to some of these
Masses ourselves. And of course we know this too well. We all know when others are
sincere and God knows when we are sincere. To help us and encourage us the church
founded by Jesus, give us Indulgences applicable to the souls in purgatory. Again
these are encouragements and helps for God knows our sincerity. As a Parish we do
have a good tradition of visiting the graves, and praying for the dead. Our tradition
with celebrating daily Mass can be improved.
Zacchaeus:
The Gospel today is about
Justice. It is also about the God of Forgiveness. We are asked to think about justice
in our own lives. Do we steal money that doesn’t belong to us? Do we tell lies when
filling out forms to get money unjustly? Do we pay our debts? Do we carry our obligations,
or do we let others take the blame if fail to do our job! Can we be trusted?
