RED WEDNESDAY: Did you ever hear of Red Wednesday. I must confess that I only heard of it last week. The editorial in the Irish Catholic was writing about Red Wednesday. By the way the Irish Catholic has become a great paper. Every Catholic should read it. If you ring the Irish Catholic they will send it to you. Red Wednesday is a day on which we Catholics are asked to pray, reflect, and to show solidarity with the suffering Church. I was shocked when I read that more than 245 million Christians face extreme persecution for their faith in the world today. I must be half asleep for I thought the persecution of Christians was long in the past. But no it’s in the present. In fact I’m told that the persecution of Christians is now more severe than at any time during the Churches long history. It is, without question the greatest human rights issue of this generation and yet many politicians are silent on the precarious situation all over the globe. While Britain has joined some other EU countries in prioritising assistance to suffering Christians, the silence from the Irish government is deafening. Unless the world starts to take a strong line on religious freedom Christians will disappear from large parts of the world - including the very birthplace of the faith-the Middle East. Already Christians have been fleeing in large numbers and those who remain keep their heads down for fear of provoking Ire. All across the Muslim world, Christians face persecution and discrimination because of their Faith. Ireland’s silence on the issue is shameful and shouldn’t continue. We cannot allow this indifference to affect the church. It is time to highlight the discrimination, persecution, and martyrdom that is part of the life of Catholics in many parts of the world. Red Wednesday – which this year falls on November 27 - is a day when people are asked to wear red to symbolise the blood of Christians that is shed because of their faith. It is also a day or a time when parish communities have a chance to reflect on that suffering, and highlight it. First and foremost as people of faith prayer is the key. But our faith is empty unless it compels us to act. It is up to everyone to think, to pray, and to act. But we first must become aware and then think, pray, and act. We could talk to our politicians when they come looking for our vote. We should talk to them about abortion also.
