Readings for the Baptism of the Lord

Is 42:1-4, 6-7. Isaiah predicts (500 BC) that ‘the suffering servant’ will be ‘appointed as covenant of the people.’ Compare the words of consecration in the Mass: “This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant….” , followed by the Eucharistic Acclamation of the congregation.

Acts 10: 34-38. Peter recounts the major events in the life of Jesus to Cornelius, a centurion of the Roman army, together with ‘relations and friends. He begins with the event recounted in today’s gospel reading. These become the first pagans to receive the Holy Spirit in the same manner as members of the chosen people.

Mt 3:13-17. The Baptism of Jesus takes place in the presence of the Father and Holy Spirit. “Indeed, there is neither true baptism nor real remission of sins where the truth of the Trinity is absent, and the remission of sins cannot be given where belief in the perfect Trinity is lacking.” (Bishop Chromatius of Acquileia, 390 AD)

Last week’s Collection was €4,936. The Collection on Monday 6th January totalled €1,730. We also received two donations of €100 and a donation of €500. Sincere thanksf
