PURPLE
FOR PENANCE – The colour purple is central
to the season of Advent because purple represents penance. Advent was introduced by the Church as a forty-day
fast before the Nativity, although the season is now shorter than forty days. Therefore, we ought to deny ourselves some
treats during Advent and make sure to go to Confession. Notice that the priest wears a purple stole
for Confessions. Confession is also
called the Sacrament of Penance and the priest assigns us penance in reparation
for our sins. One simple measurement of
our faith is the frequency of our Confession.
We know that God loves us but if we are willing to apologize to God, we
love God.
REQUIESCANT IN PACE
Our prayers are asked for those whose anniversaries
occur at this time:
Elizabeth Wilkinson, Ellen McNulty, Eddie Doran,
Brendan Houston
SUNDAY COLLECTION – £739. Restoration
collection: £577. Two-Hearts Masses: £348. Donation in lieu of flowers for the late
Hugh McSorley: £276. May he rest in
peace. Immense gratitude is due to the
McSorley family of 29 Davis Crescent.
VOCATIONS – In our Second Reading, St James encourages the
early converts: ‘You too have to be patient; do not lose heart, because the
Lord’s coming will be soon’. We pray
for all who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood, diaconate or religious
life, that they will not lose heart and be blessed with grace by the Lord’s
coming.
