Dear Parishioner and Gentle Reader,

Now that the annual blessing of graves has taken place in all three cemeteries in the parish, I wish to compliment you and thank you for the way in which you tidied family plots, while others took care of the graveyards in general; these sacred places are truly magnificent and a great credit to the memory of all those who await Resurrection. Can I respectfully suggest that, in due time, you remove dead flowers etc and bring them home or dispose of them appropriately.

The feast day of most saints is linked with their death, the day when they left this world to be born into the new life of God’s Kingdom, for which they had dedicated themselves. Today we celebrate the Birth of John the Baptist. In a famous homily, St. Augustine noted that John the Baptist’s birth came at the height of summer, and for the days following, the hours of sunlight would grow shorter. This is appropriate for John, who said of himself, “Jesus must increase; I must decrease.” Essentially, John was a man of humility, a preacher, a prophet and above all a signpost pointing people in the right direction.

Today we might remember those people who acted as signposts in our lives and brought us closer to God: “Lord, we thank you for people who guided us, but did not try to possess us: parents, teachers, spiritual guides and friends. Very simply, like John the Baptist, they said to us, ‘Look, there is the one you should follow’, and hearing that we followed Jesus.”

We too are called to imitate John the Baptist by proclaiming and pointing others to Christ. In the words of St Francis of Assisi, “Preach the Gospel always, and use words when necessary”.

With every blessing, Fr Colum

Words of Wisdom

I expect to pass through life but once. If, therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good things I can do to my fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again. William Penn (1644 - 1718).
