Readings for 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Is 66:10-14. The new Jerusalem is the Church. Her function is to introduce Christ to the world. She calls out: ‘Come and see the works of God, tremendous his deeds among men.’ She is like a mother to the nations of the world.

Gal 6:14-18. The new Israel of God are those who follow Christ, not those who make a pretence of following the old law with its emphasis upon external practices. ‘The world (i.e. the sinful world) is ‘crucified’ to Paul. It is no longer Paul’s master’; ‘Paul is crucified to the world’ means that he offers himself with Christ for the world.

Lk 10:1-12, 17-20. The target of Jesus’ missionaries is no less than all the nations of the world, symbolised by the number 72. He was ‘sending them out like lambs among wolves.’ Jesus gave them power over ‘the whole strength of the enemy’. They returned elated with success. But Jesus advised that their joy should be based on their eternal destiny with God.

Last week’s Sunday collection was €5,005.

Sincere Thanks
