Month of Prayer for the Sick

“Jesus’ words, “Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest”

(Mt 11:28) point to the mysterious path of grace that is revealed to the simple and gives new strength to those who are weary and tired. These words of Christ express the solidarity of the Son of Man with all those who are hurt and afflicted.

How many people suffer in both body and soul! Jesus urges everyone to draw near to him – “Come to me!” – and he promises them comfort and

repose. [...] The Church desires to become more and more the “inn” of the Good Samaritan who is Christ (cf. Lk 10:34), that is, a home where you can encounter his grace, which finds expression in closeness, acceptance and relief. In this home, you can meet people who, healed in their frailty by God’s mercy, will help you bear your cross and enable your suffering to give you a new perspective. You will be able to look beyond your illness to a greater horizon of new light and fresh strength for your lives.”

(Pope Francis, Message for World Day of the Sick 2020)

On Tuesday 11th February, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Church celebrates the World Day of the Sick. On this special day of intercession, in imitation of the four men who carried their sick friend to Christ on a stretcher (Mk 2:3), we are called to bring our sick brothers and sisters before Christ in prayer.

In Cappagh Parish, throughout the month of February, we will be praying in a special way for all our parishioners and loved ones who are sick.

Beginning next weekend, we’ll be praying each week for those suffering from physical illnesses; those struggling with poor mental health; and for those battling addictions. We’ll also pray for all those who care for our sick. Prayer cards will be available in all the churches of the parish, and so we’d ask you all to join in prayer for the sick and those who care for them.

To conclude this month of prayer for the sick, on Sunday 23rd February at 6pm, we will have a special Holy Hour with the Anointing of the Sick in Christ the King Church, Strathroy.

Feast of St Blaise: Throats will be blessed at all Masses on Monday 3rd February.

Holy Hour For The Youth: Every Thursday evening in Christ the King Church Fr Declan leads a Holy Hour for the youth of our parish from 8pm. During Holy Hour there will be a period of reflection on the Gospel, a time of prayer and Benediction. Afterwards there will be tea/coffee in the sacristy area so that young Catholics can meet up and strengthen each other in their faith. Attendance at the Holy Hour can be credited towards the JPII Award.

Novena Prayer for the Sick to Our Lady of Lourdes (to be prayed for 9 consecutive days)

Immaculate Mary who appeared to Saint Bernadette at the Grotto of Lourdes, continue in our time to be Mother of Mercy, Health of the sick, Refuge of sinners and Comforter of those who are suffering.

At Lourdes, you created a sanctuary for people seeking God’s healing touch.

I come before you today, asking you to intercede with Jesus your son, for those I care about,

for those I care about, for those who have asked for prayers, for those wanting to be healed.

(mention your intentions here)

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.

Saint Bernadette, pray for us.
