THIS WEEK’S CALENDAR

Sunday 28th Those whom Christ sends are to be received in his name. This is more than hospitality. It means openness to the other and to the message. Each member of the Church has received a mission so we must respect each other in a spirit of faith and love. Those whom Christ sends in an apostolic or prophetic ministry are to be listened to, whatever our natural feelings about them may be.

Monday 29th Saints Peter and Paul. St Peter, originally called Simon, a fisherman who became leader of the apostles and the rock on which the Church was built, died by crucifixion in Rome around the year 64. St Paul, Saul the Pharisee who became the ‘Apostle of the Gentiles’ was martyred by beheading around 67. Both proclaim with their lives that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Tuesday 30th The First Martyrs of Rome died in the year 64.

Wednesday 1st July St Oliver Plunkett, from Irish nobility, was ordained in Rome in 1654. He was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1669. He was forced to conduct a covert ministry during the suppression of priests. He was arrested and tried in Dundalk in 1679 for conspiring against the state. As he would not be convicted in Ireland he was moved to Newgate Prison in London and found guilty of high treason ‘for promoting the Catholic Faith’, and was condemned to death. He was martyred at Tyburn on 1 July 1681.

Friday 3rd St Thomas, Apostle, is said to have preached the gospel in India where he was martyred. The faith that led him to know Christ in his wounds sent him to the farthest places to preach Christ.

Saturday 4th St Elizabeth of Portugal (1271-1336) had an unhappy marriage with the King of Portugal. She persevered in prayer and good works and as a widow lived in poverty as a Franciscan tertiary.

The Movement of Worldwide Prayer for Marriage and Family Life. The next parish day of prayer will be this coming Friday, 3 July. The focus of our prayer for July is: Grandparents.

Cemetery Sunday will be celebrated on 26 July. It’ll be broadcast on the parish webcam from St. Pius X Church, at 2pm. This means that parishioners living abroad, or elsewhere in Ireland, and who cannot come home this summer, will be able to view the ceremony and pray with their families for their own beloved dead, and for the deceased members of our parish community.

Churches are re-opening for public Masses and other celebrations on Monday 29 June. There’ll be Mass in St. Pius X Church, Moville, at 10am every day, Monday to Friday, at 7pm on Saturday, and at 10am and 12noon on Sunday. The timetable may change, depending on how things go during this first week. Any changes will be announced in the newsletter next weekend.

The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holydays has been suspended temporarily. Some people may wish to attend Mass on a weekday, instead of on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning. It would be best for those who are elderly or vulnerable to follow Mass on the parish webcam, if possible.

The church has been disinfected with a system which will not require disinfection before or after each Mass or other celebration.

Entrance to the church, for Mass, will be by the side door. This will reduce the number of stewards needed as people arrive. If you’re coming to Mass, please observe social distancing (2 metres) both outside and inside the church.

There will be a meeting in the church at 6.45pm on Thursday 2 July for anyone who wishes to volunteer their services as steward or Eucharistic Minister. We need a number of parishioners to volunteer to act as stewards, both inside and outside the church, so that everyone adheres to the recommended social distancing. It will be important for everyone to follow the directions of the stewards, especially on entering and leaving the church.

Also, anyone who’d like to read at Mass, or act as Minister of the Eucharist, at the weekend, or during the week, please leave your name at the parochial house, and a rota will be made up.

Choirs cannot return in full just yet, but singers/musicians from any part of the parish who would like to sing/play at weekend Masses in particular will be very welcome to do so.

The rota for Eucharistic Ministers / Readers for the week ahead is as follows: Monday – Pat Norris / Gráinne McGroarty; Tuesday – Margaret McMonagle / Amy McAuliffe; Wednesday – Marion Norris / Mary McCann; Thursday – Agnes Cavanagh / Trish Weir; Friday – Kevin Cavanagh / Miriam Turnbull.
