Installed in St Mary’s Church, Cockhill In 1829,
the year of Catholic Emancipation, Father Edward Maginn was appointed parish priest
of Fahan. In addition to his famous feeding of the poor, one of the most daring
and long-sighted initiatives undertaken by him was that during his time in what
is now our two parishes, he built St Mary’s Church, Cockhill. It was opened in 1847
at the height of the famine and its attendant difficulties. With the
liturgy from St Mary’s, Cockhill having kept us tuned-in and fed spiritually throughout
this pandemic, I thought that a similarly daring initiative was needed. And so,
having been made aware of a cut-price deal from Henderson Music, Derry, and with
the help of local labour and expertise in joinery and electrics, and the support
of the Parish Finance Committee, a new Makin Organ has been installed. The cost
to the parish has been STG£20,000. Already, two families have made significant contributions
to this project. On behalf of the parish I thank them – as I thank sincerely all
who are continuing to support the work of the parish these days. The organ
will beautify the liturgy for years to come and will be of particular benefit to
us as we celebrate Confirmation for the 263 children of both the parishes once served
by Father (later Bishop) Maginn all those years ago. I commend
this project to your on-going support. Thank you. Father Bradley Confirmation
– Coineartú 2020 In the coming
two weeks, beginning Monday 17 August, 263 children are due to make their Confirmation
in these parishes. There will be 10 Confirmation ceremonies with a maximum unit
size of 30. With the help of God, the time, date and venue for each ceremony will
continue as previously announced. Prudently,
due to rising infection rates, the Government have retained the present maximum
number for gathering indoors at 50 people. Where it is possible, religious gatherings
in churches can be greater where the church space can be split into two or more
zones. The reason for all the Confirmation ceremonies taking place in St Mary’s
Chapel, Cockhill is that it is the largest space we have in both parishes and, very
importantly, it can be split into two zones. The original
intention of facilitating the young people, their parents and sponsors inside the
Chapel for the ceremony was based on the expected and much hoped-for Phase IV restrictions.
Since the restrictions associated with Phase III are still in vogue, the numbers
in each zone must be limited to 50. For that reason, now only the young people,
their parents and teachers together with parish staff, altar servers, music and
singing, and the photographer can be admitted to the Chapel for each ceremony. The
class teacher or the principal in respect of each class/school will act as sponsor
for the young people. PTO In continuation
of last year’s practice in the Buncrana Parish, through the kindness of our environmental
group, all children being confirmed will receive a sapling to be carefully planted
after the ceremony. These will be carefully and professionally delivered outside
the Chapel, as the children depart after each ceremony. Sponsors are asked to be
available outside the Chapel 45 minutes after each respective ceremony begins. The
saplings will be distributed to them and they will then hold these plants for the
children as they emerge – a potent symbol of the role of planting, nurturing, sheltering
and protecting which the sponsors together with the parents must take in respect
of the children and their faith. Whilst I
apologise for any inconvenience caused by this change, I hope that it will all the
more clearly foster and explain the steps and responsibility which we must all take
for protecting and promoting the precious gift of life and the well-being of each
person in Christ. All ceremonies
will be streamed on www.churchservices.tv/cockhill. Father Francis

A constantly recurrent
theme of the Old Testament is that Yahweh’s outreach is to the whole world and to
all of his creation. The Lord’s house will be known as a house of prayer for all
peoples. Second Reading:
It had been their
rejection of Christ by the Jews that had sent Paul on his three missionary journeys
and the other Apostles on theirs to bring salvation to the Gentiles, i.e. people
like the Romans. Yet Paul fervently trusts that in God’s plan His mercy may yet
triumph in achieving the conversion of his countrymen. Gospel:
Resolute, fearless
and humble faith wins the day once more with Jesus! It is the response of placing
our faith in Him, it seems, that is at the core of our salvation. The Canaanite
woman’s daughter was instantly cured. Anniversary Masses St. Mary’s Cockhill Mon 17th

a good thing, at least in terms of progress. If it was easy, everybody would be
doing it and your competition would be outrageous. |
